Butler was the quintessential “table-setter” of the 1980s and 90s, playing for the Braves, Indians, Giants, Dodgers, and Mets. He finished his career with 558 stolen bases and was famously difficult to strike out. He led the league in triples twice and runs scored twice.
Butler was a key component of the San Francisco Giants’ National League pennant-winning team. While playing for the Dodgers in 1991, Butler had perhaps his best season, finishing 7th in MVP voting and earning his only All-Star nod.
After being diagnosed with throat cancer in May 1996, he made an inspirational return to the Dodgers’ lineup just four months later in September.
