Key was a central figure for three different AL East franchises, often serving as the “big game” starter.
Toronto Blue Jays (1984–1992): Key holds the record for the most wins by a left-hander in Blue Jays history (116). He famously earned the win in the clinching Game 6 of the 1992 World Series, delivering Toronto’s first championship.
New York Yankees (1993–1996): He signed with the Yankees as a free agent and immediately anchored their rotation. In 1996, he once again outdueled Greg Maddux in the deciding Game 6 of the World Series to secure the Yankees’ first title in 18 years.
Baltimore Orioles (1997–1998): Key capped off his career with an impressive 16-win All-Star season in 1997, helping lead Baltimore to the ALCS.
A couple of Jimmy Key career highlights include being the winning pitcher in the clinching game of two different World Series (1992 and 1996). Selected as an All-Star five times in 1985, 1991, 1993, 1994, and 1997. He was also led the American League in 1987 with a 2.76 ERA and finished as the Cy Young runner-up to Roger Clemens.
Key was a master of the sinker, curveball, and backdoor slider. He was rarely rattled on the mound and was notoriously difficult to run on; his pickoff move was considered one of the best in the league, famously catching elite base-stealers.
