Did You Know? Hrbek made his big-league debut in late 1981, hitting a dramatic 12th-inning game-winning home run in his very first game. By 1982, he had locked down the starting first base job full-time, injecting immediate, high-leverage power into the Minnesota order.
He authored a spectacular rookie campaign, batting a brilliant .301 with 23 home runs and 92 RBIs to earn his first career All-Star selection. He finished as the runner-up for the 1982 AL Rookie of the Year Award (lending way to Cal Ripken Jr.). Hrbek’s rapid ascent gave a rebuilding Twins franchise an instant, elite cornerstone to build around for the rest of the decade.
