Wally Joyner’s career spanned 16 seasons in Major League Baseball, from 1986 to 2001. He played for four teams: the California Angels (later the Anaheim Angels), Kansas City Royals, San Diego Padres, and Atlanta Braves.
Joyner’s career began with a remarkable rookie season in 1986 with the California Angels, where he hit 22 home runs and had 100 RBIs. His performance earned him a starting first baseman spot in the 1986 All-Star Game, making him the first rookie to be voted into a starting lineup for the event.
After six seasons with the Angels, Joyner signed with the Kansas City Royals, playing with them from 1992-1995. He then played four seasons with the San Diego Padres (1996-1999), where he was the starting first baseman on the team that won the National League pennant in 1998. He played one season with the Atlanta Braves in 2000 before returning to the Angels for his final season in 2001, retiring on June 16, 2001.
Throughout his career, Joyner was known for his solid hitting and defensive skills. He led the league in fielding percentage at first base four times. Joyner was a member of the pennant-winning 1998 San Diego Padres team.
After his playing career, he worked as a hitting coach and special assistant for the Padres.
