Jackson quickly became a core anchor of the young, division-winning 2007 Diamondbacks and turned in a breakout 2008 season. Unfortunately, his trajectory was derailed by a rare, severe illness.
The 2008 Breakout: Jackson hit .300 with 12 home runs, 75 RBIs, and an .823 OPS in 2008, drawing 59 walks while striking out just 61 times. On April 18, 2008, he came a single away from the cycle—instead hitting his second triple of the game off Greg Maddux because he refused to stop at second.
The Valley Fever Illness: Early in the 2009 season, Jackson contracted Valley Fever, a debilitating fungal infection. The illness caused severe fatigue, forced him to lose roughly 35 pounds, and wiped out almost his entire season. He was never able to fully regain his pre-illness strength or power output.
Journeyman Finish: He was traded to the Oakland Athletics in 2010 and later had a brief stint with the Boston Red Sox in 2011 (where he hit a memorable grand slam over the Green Monster) before retiring.
