Milledge’s big-league arrival was accompanied by immense fanfare, but his early career became defined as much by off-field headlines and traditional baseball “unwritten rule” clashes as his raw talent.
The High-Five Debut Moment: On June 4, 2006, as a 21-year-old rookie, Milledge hit a game-tying, 10th-inning home run against the San Francisco Giants for his first MLB homer. As he took the field for the 11th inning, an ecstatic Milledge high-fived fans sitting in the front row along the foul line at Shea Stadium. While fans loved the youthful excitement, the gesture drew sharp criticism from veterans and media for violating traditional player etiquette.
Traded to Washington: After parts of two seasons in Flushing where he couldn’t secure a permanent role in a veteran-heavy lineup, the Mets traded Milledge to the Washington Nationals in December 2007 for Ryan Church and Brian Schneider.
Nationals & Beyond: He enjoyed his most productive MLB stretch in Washington, posting career highs in home runs (14) and stolen bases (24) in 2008. He later played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago White Sox before enjoying a late-career overseas resurgence in Japan with the Tokyo Yakult Swallows.
