One of the most prolific and dependable closers of the 2000s, Francisco Cordero (nicknamed “Coco”) spent 14 seasons anchoring bullpens across major league baseball. Signed as an amateur free agent by the Detroit Tigers out of the Dominican Republic in 1995, Cordero converted from a starter to a high-leverage reliever and grew into a multi-time All-Star, racking up 329 career saves.
Known for his heavy, mid-90s sinking fastball and sharp slider, Cordero stands as one of only a handful of relief pitchers in MLB history to record over 100 saves in both the American and National Leagues.
Cordero served as a shutdown ninth-inning anchor for three different franchises—the Texas Rangers, Milwaukee Brewers, and Cincinnati Reds.
The Monster 2004 Texas Season: Cordero’s true superstar breakout came with Texas in 2004, when he converted 49 saves (second in MLB only to Mariano Rivera) while posting a 2.13 ERA and earning his first AL All-Star selection.
Milwaukee Brewers Resurgence: After being traded to Milwaukee midway through 2006, he took over the closer role and turned in an elite 2007 season, saving 44 games with a 2.98 ERA and winning the NL Rolaids Relief Man Award.
Cincinnati Reds Anchor: Cordero signed with Cincinnati in 2008 and led their bullpen for four seasons, topping the 30-save mark in all four years. In 2010, he saved 40 games to help lead the Reds to their first NL Central title in fifteen years.
