Randy Johnson, nicknamed “The Big Unit” due to his imposing 6-foot-10 height, is a former professional baseball pitcher who played for 22 seasons. He is widely considered one of the greatest left-handed pitchers in baseball history.
Johnson’s career spanned from 1988 to 2009, during which he played for several teams, including the Montreal Expos, Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros, Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Yankees, and San Francisco Giants. A highlight of his career came with the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he signed a four-year deal and won four consecutive National League Cy Young Awards from 1999 to 2002. He also helped lead the Diamondbacks to their first and only World Series title in 2001, sharing the World Series MVP award with Curt Schilling.
Throughout his career, Johnson achieved numerous milestones. He was a 10-time All-Star, won five Cy Young Awards (one in the American League and four in the National League), and a pitching Triple Crown in 2002.
Johnson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015 on his first ballot.

Did You Know? What truly solidified Johnson’s legacy as an immortal of the game was his incredible durability, pitching effectively at the major league level until the age of 46.
On May 18, 2004, at the age of 40, Johnson pitched a flawless Perfect Game against the Atlanta Braves, becoming the oldest pitcher in major league history to achieve the milestone. He wrapped up his brilliant 22-year major league journey by capturing his 300th career victory on June 4, 2009, with the San Francisco Giants. Concluding his career with 303 wins and an astonishing 4,875 strikeouts—ranking him second only to Nolan Ryan on the all-time leaderboard—The Big Unit remains the definitive gold standard for pure, left-handed pitching intimidation.
