Gary Sheffield was a powerful and controversial baseball player known for his explosive bat speed and long, successful career.
Sheffield played for eight different teams over his 22-year career, which lasted from 1988 to 2009. He was known as a fearsome hitter and earned a reputation as a clutch performer. In 1992, he won the National League batting title with a .330 average while playing for the San Diego Padres.
He became the 25th player in MLB history to reach the 500-home-run milestone. His 500th home run was also his first as a member of the New York Mets, a unique and historic accomplishment. Sheffield was a key member of the 1997 Florida Marlins team that won the World Series. He was selected to the All-Star team nine times, and he won the Silver Slugger Award five times.
Sheffield’s career was marked by a contentious relationship with management and a reputation for being outspoken. This personality, combined with his frequent trades, made him a controversial figure at times.
