Jim Abbott was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 36th round of the 1985 MLB draft but did not sign, choosing to attend college instead. The California Angels then selected him in the first round (eighth overall pick) of the 1988 MLB draft. He went directly to the major leagues in 1989 without playing in the minor leagues.

Abbott’s professional career spanned 10 seasons with four different teams: the California Angels (1989-1992, 1995-1996), New York Yankees (1993-1994), Chicago White Sox (1995, 1998), and Milwaukee Brewers (1999).

As a rookie, he had a 12-12 win-loss record and finished fifth in the American League Rookie of the Year voting. Abbott had his best season with an 18-11 record and a 2.89 ERA, finishing third in the American League Cy Young Award voting. He won the Tony Conigliaro Award, given to a player who overcomes adversity.

He retired after the 1999 season with a career record of 87 wins and 108 losses, a 4.25 earned run average, and 888 strikeouts. After his playing career, Abbott became a motivational speaker. He was also elected to the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.

Did You Know? When taking the mound, Abbott would balance his custom glove over the stump of his right arm. He would execute a classic, powerful left-handed delivery, and the exact millisecond the ball left his fingertips, he would seamlessly slip his left hand into the glove to prepare for a batted ball. If the ball was hit to him, he would field it, quickly cradle the glove back under his right arm, extract the ball with his left hand, and fire a strike to first base. He performed this entire, hyper-complex sequence in the blink of an eye, routinely fielding bunts and comebacker grounders with the grace of a Gold Glover.
