William “Bill” Lee Gullickson is a former Major League Baseball pitcher with a professional career spanning 18 years, 14 of which were in MLB (1979-1994), along with two seasons in Japan. Known for his durability and ability to accumulate wins, Gullickson played for five different MLB teams.
In 1980, his first full season, Gullickson had an impressive rookie year, going 10-5 with a 3.00 ERA. He finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting. He was a key part of the Expos team that won the NL East title in the strike-shortened 1981 season.
Gullickson was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in December 1985. He continued to be a workhorse, posting a 15-12 record with a 3.38 ERA in 1986. In August 1987, he was traded to the New York Yankees. He finished the 1987 season with a combined 14-13 record across both leagues.
After the 1987 season, Gullickson signed a $2 million offer to pitch in Japan for the Yomiuri Giants. He spent two seasons there, compiling a 21-14 record. During his time in Japan, he developed a close friendship with fellow pitcher Masumi Kuwata.
Gullickson returned to MLB in 1990, signing with the Houston Astros. He had a 10-14 record with a 3.82 ERA. He then signed with the Detroit Tigers and had a remarkable career resurgence. In 1991, he had a career-high 20 wins against 9 losses, leading the American League in wins and placing eighth in the AL Cy Young Award voting.
