Harold Baines had a long and consistent career in Major League Baseball (MLB), playing for 22 seasons from 1980 to 2001. Primarily a designated hitter and right fielder, he is best known for his three stints with the Chicago White Sox. He also played for the Texas Rangers, Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, and Cleveland Indians.
Baines was the first overall selection in the 1977 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut in 1980 with the White Sox. Throughout his career, he was a reliable hitter, finishing with a .289 batting average, 2,866 hits, 384 home runs, and 1,628 RBIs. He batted over .300 in six seasons and had six All-Star selections (1985, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1999). In 1984, he led the American League in slugging percentage. He also earned a Silver Slugger Award in 1989. While he never won a World Series as a player, he did earn a World Series ring as a coach for the Chicago White Sox in 2005.
The White Sox retired his number 3 in 1989, and he was inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame in 2009. In 2019, Harold Baines was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Today’s Game Era Committee.
