Dotson’s career peak coincided with the White Sox’s famous “Winning Ugly” season. He was a power pitcher who relied on a heavy sinker and a sharp slider to induce ground balls and strikeouts.
He finished 4th in the AL Cy Young voting (his teammate LaMarr Hoyt won it, making them one of the most feared duos in baseball that year).
Dotson followed up his career year with an All-Star selection in 1984, proving he wasn’t a one-hit wonder. He won 14+ games in three of four seasons between 1981 and 1984. He threw over 200 innings in a season four different times.
Like many power pitchers of that era, heavy workloads took a toll. He underwent arm surgery in late 1985, which sapped some of his velocity and effectiveness. He was eventually traded to the New York Yankees in 1988 for Dan Pasqua and others. He is remembered as one of the most reliable starters in White Sox history.
