After starting his career in the bullpen, Hoyt moved into the Chicago White Sox starting rotation in 1982 and immediately took off. He led the American League in wins for two consecutive seasons 1982 and 1983. Interestingly, his 3.66 ERA remains the highest ever for a Cy Young winner, a testament to how much voters valued his 24 wins and his workhorse mentality (260.2 innings pitched) during the “Winning Ugly” era of the White Sox.
In late 1984, Hoyt was traded to the San Diego Padres in a blockbuster deal that sent Ozzie Guillén to Chicago. He had an immediate impact in the National League. He went 16–8 in 1985 with a 3.47 ERA. He was named the starting pitcher for the National League in the 1985 All-Star Game, where he pitched three brilliant innings to earn the All-Star Game MVP honors.
Tragically, Hoyt’s career was cut short by off-field struggles and a series of drug-related arrests in 1986 and 1987. He attempted a comeback with the White Sox, but it never materialized, and he retired with 98 career wins. He passed away in 2021 at the age of 66.
