Pettini was a classic utility infielder for the San Francisco Giants. He never sought the limelight; he was valued for his versatility across second base, third base, and shortstop.
After his final MLB game in 1983, Pettini transitioned into the St. Louis Cardinals organization, where he would spend nearly three decades. He spent the late ’80s and ’90s managing various minor league affiliates, including the Louisville Redbirds, whom he led to an American Association championship in 1995.
Pettini found his greatest success in the dugout rather than on the field. In 2002, legendary manager Tony La Russa named him the Cardinals’ Bench Coach. As a key strategist for La Russa, Pettini earned two World Series rings when the Cardinals won it all in 2006 and 2011.
In 2011, he served as the interim manager for a few games while La Russa was sidelined with shingles, officially recording a few wins to his name. Following La Russa’s retirement, Pettini served as the bench coach for the Houston Astros in 2012.
