Ryne Dee Sandberg, affectionately known as “Ryno,” was a prominent American professional baseball player, coach, and manager. He passed away on July 28, 2025, at the age of 65.

Sandberg spent the majority of his 16-year playing career (1981-1997) as a second baseman for the Chicago Cubs, with a brief stint with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1981. He was widely regarded as one of the best all-around second basemen in baseball history due to his exceptional defense, power hitting, and speed.

1984 was his breakout season where he batted .314 with 200 hits, 36 doubles, 19 triples, 19 home runs, 84 RBIs, and 32 stolen bases, leading the NL in runs scored and triples. He also famously hit two game-tying home runs in a single game against Bruce Sutter of the St. Louis Cardinals, a contest now known as “The Sandberg Game.”

He was selected for the All-Star team for 10 consecutive seasons from 1984 to 1993. Sandberg was a defensive stalwart, winning nine consecutive Gold Glove Awards at second base from 1983 to 1991. He also earned recognition for his offensive prowess, winning seven Silver Slugger Awards. Sandberg was known for his unusual power for a second baseman. He led the National League in home runs with 40 in 1990, becoming the first NL second baseman since Rogers Hornsby in 1925 to do so.

Ryne Sandberg was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005. His jersey number 23 was retired by the Chicago Cubs.

After his playing career, Sandberg transitioned into coaching and managing. He spent several years managing in the minor league systems for both the Chicago Cubs and the Philadelphia Phillies. He then joined the Philadelphia Phillies organization, serving as their third base coach in 2013 before being named interim manager in August 2013. He managed the Phillies from 2013 to midway through the 2015 season, compiling a managerial record of 119 wins and 159 losses.
