Willie McGee is a former American professional baseball player and coach who played as an outfielder in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 18 seasons (1982-1999). He is most prominently known for his time with the St. Louis Cardinals.
McGee was a key contributor to the St. Louis Cardinals’ World Series victory in 1982, with a particularly notable performance in Game 3 where he hit two home runs and made a game-saving defensive catch. His best season was in 1985 when he won the National League Most Valuable Player award. That year, he led the NL in batting average (.353), hits (216), and triples (18). His .353 batting average was the second-highest by a switch-hitter in NL history at the time.
He won two National League batting titles (1985, 1990). McGee was recognized for his excellent defense in the outfield, winning three Gold Glove Awards (1983, 1985, 1986). He also earned a Silver Slugger Award in 1985 for his offensive prowess. He was a four-time All-Star (1983, 1985, 1987, 1988) and was inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014.
After his playing career, McGee served as a coach for the St. Louis Cardinals.
