Herbert Jude Score (1933–2008) was a powerful left-handed pitcher whose Major League career was marked by immense early promise and a tragic on-field injury that permanently altered his trajectory. He later became a highly respected broadcaster.

In his debut season, he went 16–10 with a 2.85 ERA and led the American League (AL) with 245 strikeouts, setting a new MLB rookie record (later broken by Dwight Gooden). He was an AL All-Star in both 1955 and 1956. At age 23, he was widely regarded as a future Hall of Famer.

While pitching against the New York Yankees at Municipal Stadium, a screaming line drive hit by Yankees second baseman Gil McDougald struck Score squarely in the face, fracturing facial bones and injuring his eye. Score missed the rest of the 1957 season. While he recovered his vision, he was never the same dominant pitcher upon his return. Score himself later contended that the eye injury was not the cause of his decline. He claimed that a subsequent, separate tendon injury in his elbow and forearm, sustained in 1958, forced him to change his pitching motion, leading to a loss of velocity and movement on his legendary fastball.

Score served as a television and radio play-by-play announcer for the Cleveland Indians from 1964 through 1997, spanning 34 years.

He was inducted into the Cleveland Guardians Hall of Fame in 2006.
