Louis Joseph “Lou” Berberet (1929–2004) was a Major League Baseball catcher who played for seven seasons in the American League during the mid-to-late 1950s. He was known primarily for his sturdy defense behind the plate.
Berberet played for the New York Yankees (1954–1955), Washington Senators (1956–1958), Boston Red Sox (1958) and Detroit Tigers (1959–1960). He was considered a solid defensive receiver. He finished his career with an impressive .992 fielding percentage and was highly efficient at throwing out base runners.
He began his career in the Yankees system, but his path to a starting role was blocked by Hall of Famers Yogi Berra and Elston Howard. Berberet often joked that he was a career .400 hitter with the Yankees, based on his small sample size of two hits in five at-bats in both 1954 and 1955.
Like many players of his era, his path to the majors was delayed by military service, as he spent two years in the Army during the Korean War.
