Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra was an American professional baseball catcher, manager, and coach who spent almost his entire 19-year Major League Baseball (MLB) playing career with the New York Yankees (1946-1963). Universally beloved for his unique personality, “Yogi-isms,” and unparalleled success, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest catchers in baseball history and one of its most iconic figures. Berra was an exceptionally durable and skilled catcher, known for his strong arm, quick reflexes, and ability to handle pitchers. Berra won the American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award three times (1951, 1954, 1955).

He played in 14 World Series as a member of the Yankees, winning an astounding 10 World Series championships. He was selected to the American League All-Star team 18 times (1948-1962), making him an All-Star in every full season he played. After his playing days, Berra transitioned into managing and coaching, primarily for the New York Yankees and New York Mets.

Yogi Berra was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. His uniform number 8 was retired by the New York Yankees, and a monument honoring him stands in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium. The Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center exists on the campus of Montclair State University, dedicated to preserving his legacy and promoting his values.

Yogi Berra’s most widely recognized and collected rookie card is this 1948 Bowman #6.
