Wilver Dornell “Willie” Stargell, affectionately known as “Pops” later in his career, was a towering figure in every sense of the word. A powerful left-handed slugger, he spent his entire 21-season Major League Baseball career (1962-1982) with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He was a cornerstone of the Pirates’ teams that captured six National League East division titles, two National League pennants, and two World Series championships (1971 and 1979). “Pops” was renowned for his majestic home runs. He amassed 475 career home runs, often hitting balls out of ballparks that few others could touch. He led the National League in home runs twice (1971, 1973) and in RBIs once (1973). He famously hit a ball out of Dodger Stadium twice, a feat virtually unheard of.

In 1971, Stargell led the NL with 48 home runs and finished second in MVP voting as the Pirates defeated the Baltimore Orioles in seven games to win the World Series. Stargell was a seven-time All-Star (1964–1966, 1971–1973, 1978).

After retiring in 1982, Willie Stargell continued to be involved in baseball, serving as a coach for the Atlanta Braves and later returning to the Pirates organization in various capacities, including a special advisor to the general manager and owner. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988 on his first ballot, a clear recognition of his immense talent and impact on the game. His uniform No. 8 was retired by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1982.

Stargell was also a dedicated humanitarian, actively involved in raising awareness and funds for sickle cell anemia research through the Willie Stargell Foundation.

Willie Stargell’s most widely recognized rookie card is this 1963 Topps #553.  It’s a “Rookie Stars” card, featuring Willie Stargell along with Jim Gosger, Brock Davis, and John Herrnstein.
