Gaylord Jackson Perry was a legendary right-handed pitcher whose career spanned 22 seasons in Major League Baseball (1962-1983). He is best remembered for his remarkable longevity, his two Cy Young Awards, his 300-win milestone, and his infamous reputation for throwing a spitball.

Perry began his career with the Giants and gradually developed into a formidable starting pitcher. He formed a powerful duo with fellow Hall of Famer Juan Marichal. Perry holds the distinction of being the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in both the American and National Leagues.

Perry’s name became synonymous with the spitball, an illegal pitch where the pitcher applies a foreign substance (like saliva, Vaseline, or K-Y Jelly) to the ball to alter its flight. While he consistently denied it publicly for years, he later admitted to using it, even titling his 1974 autobiography, “Me and the Spitter”.

On May 6, 1982, at age 43, Perry achieved a major milestone, recording his 300th career victory, becoming one of only a select few pitchers in MLB history to reach that mark. He was also a five-time All-Star (1966, 1970, 1972, 1974, 1978).

Gaylord Perry’s most recognized and collected rookie card is the 1962 Topps #199. However many collectors also recognize this 1963 Topps #169 as a Gaylord Perry rookie card.
