Michael Stephen “Mickey” Lolich was a durable and highly successful left-handed pitcher who spent the vast majority of his 16-season Major League Baseball career (1963-1979) with the Detroit Tigers. Lolich cemented his place in baseball lore with one of the most dominant World Series performances in history.
Lolich debuted with the Tigers in 1963 and steadily developed into one of the American League’s most consistent and reliable pitchers. He holds numerous Detroit Tigers pitching records. In the 1968 World Series against the heavily favored St. Louis Cardinals, Lolich delivered an unforgettable performance, particularly stepping up when the Tigers’ ace, Denny McLain, struggled. He outdueled the legendary Bob Gibson in Game 7, pitching on just two days’ rest, in a classic pitching duel that saw the Tigers come back from a 3-1 series deficit to win the championship. For his heroic efforts, Lolich was named the 1968 World Series MVP. He was also a three-time All-Star (1969, 1971, 1972).
After 13 seasons with the Tigers, Lolich was traded to the New York Mets for the 1976 season. He also played briefly for the San Diego Padres (1978-1979) before retiring. After his playing career, Mickey Lolich enjoyed a quieter life, notably running a donut shop in the Detroit area.
