James Sherman “Jim” Wynn, famously nicknamed “The Toy Cannon,” was an American professional baseball player who captivated fans with his immense power packed into a relatively small (5’9″, 160 lbs) frame. His 15-season Major League Baseball career (1963-1977) saw him as a dynamic center fielder and a consistent home run threat, primarily for the Houston Colt .45s/Astros.

Wynn earned his iconic nickname early in his career due to his compact size coupled with an incredibly powerful bat and a strong throwing arm. He hit a career-high 37 home runs in 1967, and followed that up with 33 in 1969. He reached the 20-home run mark eight times in his career, and hit 30+ three times. In his prime, Wynn was also a threat on the bases, stealing 225 bases in his career. He was a good defensive center fielder, showcasing both range and a strong arm. After a trade from the Astros, Wynn had a spectacular season with the Dodgers in 1974. He hit 32 home runs and drove in a career-high 108 RBIs, finishing 5th in the NL MVP voting and helping the Dodgers win the National League pennant. He was also named an All-Star in both 1974 and 1975. Notably Wynn also played for the Atlanta Braves (1976), New York Yankees (1977), and Milwaukee Brewers (1977) before retiring.

After his playing career, Jim Wynn remained connected to baseball, particularly with the Houston Astros. His uniform No. 24 was retired by the Houston Astros in 2005, and he was inducted into the inaugural class of the Houston Astros Hall of Fame in 2019.

Jim Wynn’s most recognized rookie card is this 1964 Topps #38. This card is part of the 1964 Topps set, known for its bold team name banner at the top and the “Magic Rub-Off” trivia question on the back. It features a young Jim Wynn in his Houston Colt .45s/Astros uniform.
