William “Willie” Wattison Horton is a revered figure in Detroit Tigers history and a powerful slugger whose 18-season Major League Baseball career (1963-1980) left an indelible mark on the game.

Horton spent the vast majority of his career with the Detroit Tigers, becoming a fan favorite and a central figure in the team’s success. Horton was known for his raw, unadulterated power from the right side of the plate. Despite a compact build, he could hit towering home runs. He amassed 325 career home runs, ranking him among the top right-handed sluggers of his era. In the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals, Horton batted .304 with a home run, but perhaps his most iconic play was his perfect throw from left field to nab Lou Brock at the plate in Game 5, a pivotal moment that helped shift the momentum of the series and allowed the Tigers to come back from a 3-1 deficit to win their first World Series in over 20 years. Horton was a four-time American League All-Star (1965, 1968, 1970, 1973).

In the later stages of his career, as injuries took their toll, Horton transitioned effectively to the Designated Hitter role. He was twice named the American League’s Outstanding Designated Hitter (1975, 1979). In 1979 with the Seattle Mariners, he had a remarkable comeback season, hitting 29 home runs and a career-high 106 RBIs, earning the Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year Award.

After retiring as a player in 1980, Willie Horton continued his association with baseball, serving as a coach for the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox. Most notably, he has remained an integral part of the Detroit Tigers organization as a Special Assistant to the President/CEO/General Manager since 2003.

His uniform No. 23 was retired by the Detroit Tigers in 2000, and a statue of him was unveiled at Comerica Park, solidifying his status as one of the franchise’s all-time greats. He was inducted into the Michigan Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019.
