Louis “Lou” Clark Brock was a dynamic and electrifying left fielder who transformed the game with his speed and became one of baseball’s most iconic figures. He played for 19 seasons in Major League Baseball (1961-1979), primarily with the St. Louis Cardinals, and was a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
Brock began his career with the Chicago Cubs in 1961. However, his career truly took off after he was traded from the Cubs to the St. Louis Cardinals on June 15, 1964, for pitcher Ernie Broglio. This trade is widely regarded as one of the most lopsided in baseball history.
Lou Brock revolutionized base stealing. He was a constant threat on the basepaths, putting immense pressure on opposing pitchers and catchers. He led the National League in stolen bases an incredible eight times (1966-1969, 1971-1974). In 1974, at the age of 35, he set a single-season MLB record with 118 stolen bases, breaking Maury Wills’ record of 104 set in 1962. This record stood until Rickey Henderson surpassed it in 1982. While renowned for his baserunning, Brock was also a very good hitter. He finished his career with 3,023 hits, becoming just the 13th player in MLB history to reach that milestone at the time.
Brock was a central figure in the Cardinals’ success during the 1960s, helping them win two World Series championships (1964 and 1967) and three National League pennants (1964, 1967, 1968). He was also a six-time All-Star (1967, 1971, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1979).
Lou Brock was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985 on his first ballot, a testament to his undeniable impact on the game. His uniform No. 20 was retired by the St. Louis Cardinals.
After his playing career, he remained active in baseball as a coach and special instructor for the Cardinals, and also pursued a successful business career.
Lou Brock’s most recognized and collected rookie card is this 1962 Topps #387. This card is part of the distinctive 1962 Topps set, famous for its wood-grain borders and the “peeling photo” effect. The card features a clear color photograph of a young Brock in his Chicago Cubs uniform.
