Thomas “Tom” Michael Tresh was a versatile infielder and outfielder who played nine seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1961 to 1969. He is best known for his time with the New York Yankees, where he was a significant part of their success in the early to mid-1960s.
Tom Tresh came from a baseball family; his father, Mike Tresh, was also an MLB catcher. Tresh burst onto the scene in 1962 with the New York Yankees. Tresh had a fantastic rookie season, batting .286 with 20 home runs and 93 RBIs, earning him the American League Rookie of the Year award. He was the first Yankee rookie shortstop to start on Opening Day since Derek Jeter in 1996. Tresh was a three-time All-Star (1962, 1963) and won a Gold Glove Award in 1965 as an outfielder.
He was a key contributor to the Yankees’ World Series championship in 1962. In Game 5 of that series, he hit a crucial three-run home run that broke a tie and led to a Yankees victory.
Tresh’s career with the Yankees concluded in 1969 when he was traded to the Detroit Tigers. He played briefly for the Tigers before retiring at the age of 31. After his playing days, Tom Tresh returned to his alma mater, Central Michigan University, where he worked as an assistant placement director for many years. He also had a hand in inventing the “Slide-Rite,” a training tool for teaching sliding and diving skills in various sports.
