John Wesley “Boog” Powell was a colossal figure in Major League Baseball, known for his prodigious power as a left-handed hitter and his imposing presence as a first baseman. He spent the majority of his 17-season career (1961-1977) with the Baltimore Orioles.
Boog Powell hit at least 20 home runs in nine different seasons, including four seasons with 30 or more. He finished his career with 339 home runs. His career year came in 1970, when he was named the American League Most Valuable Player. Powell was a key offensive force for the Orioles teams that won two World Series championships (1966 and 1970). He was a four-time All-Star (1968-1971), consistently recognized as one of the best players in the American League.
After his playing days, Boog Powell remained a highly visible and popular figure, especially in Baltimore. He became known for his BBQ catering business, often setting up shop outside Camden Yards, the Orioles’ current home stadium, serving his famous BBQ to fans before and after games.
