Minervino Alejandro “Minnie” Rojas Landin (1933-2002) was a Cuban professional baseball player who made a significant, albeit brief, impact as a right-handed relief pitcher in Major League Baseball for the California Angels in the late 1960s. His career is notable for his late arrival to the majors and his immediate success.
Minnie Rojas’s path to MLB was a long one, typical of many Cuban players who faced political and logistical hurdles to play in the United States. He played for many seasons in the Mexican League, various minor leagues, and even semi-pro leagues before getting his shot at the highest level. In 1965, Rojas had a stellar 21-win season as a starter for Jalisco, catching the eye of the California Angels. They purchased his contract, and after starting the 1966 season in Triple-A, the Angels called him up to the majors in late May. He made his MLB debut as a 32-year-old rookie. Though his MLB career only spanned three seasons, Rojas quickly made a name for himself as a reliable and effective relief pitcher.
He became a dominant closer for the Angels, leading the American League with 27 saves, a franchise record that stood for 18 years. Unfortunately, lingering arm issues, including calcium deposits and tendonitis in his elbow, severely hampered his effectiveness in 1968 and ultimately led to his retirement from baseball.
Minnie Rojas’s only recognized Major League rookie card is this 1967 Topps #104. This card features Rojas as a member of the California Angels and is part of the clean, full-photo design of the 1967 Topps set.
