Larry Eugene Hisle was a talented and powerful outfielder whose Major League Baseball career spanned 14 seasons (1968–1982). While injuries unfortunately cut short his prime, he had several outstanding seasons where he was one of the American League’s top offensive threats.

He made his Major League debut with the Phillies in 1968 at the age of 20. While he saw significant playing time in 1969 and 1970, Hisle struggled to find consistent offensive footing with the Phillies. In a move that revitalized his career, Hisle was traded to the Minnesota Twins in late 1972.

With the Twins, Hisle blossomed into a legitimate power hitter and run producer. His best season came in 1977, where he had a career year. He batted .302 with 28 home runs and led the American League with an impressive 119 RBIs. This stellar performance earned him his first All-Star selection and a fifth-place finish in the AL MVP voting.

Hisle’s career was severely hampered by a series of injuries, primarily to his shoulder and rotator cuff, beginning in 1979. These injuries limited him to just 27 games in 1979 and forced him to miss the entire 1980 season. Despite his playing career being cut short, Hisle remained with the Brewers and was on the coaching staff during their 1982 World Series appearance. Later in his career, he served as a coach for the Toronto Blue Jays teams that won back-to-back World Series championships in 1992 and 1993.

After his playing career was prematurely ended by injuries, Larry Hisle embarked on a long and successful career as a hitting coach for several MLB organizations, including the Toronto Blue Jays (where he won his World Series rings), and the Philadelphia Phillies.
