David Allan “Rags” Righetti is a former American professional baseball player and coach, primarily known for his pitching career with the New York Yankees and his long tenure as a pitching coach for the San Francisco Giants.
Righetti made his MLB debut in 1979 and won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 1981 as a starting pitcher, posting an 8-4 record with a 2.06 ERA. On July 4, 1983, Righetti etched his name in Yankees history by throwing a no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.
In 1984, the Yankees moved Righetti to the bullpen to become their closer. This proved to be a highly successful transition. In 1986, he set a then-Major League record with 46 saves, earning him the AL Rolaids Relief Man Award. He also won this award in 1987. He was a two-time AL All-Star in 1986 and 1987.
After leaving the Yankees as a free agent, Righetti pitched for the San Francisco Giants (1991-1993), Oakland Athletics (1994), Toronto Blue Jays (1994), and Chicago White Sox (1995).
After retiring as a player, Righetti transitioned to coaching. He spent 18 seasons as the pitching coach for the San Francisco Giants, a period during which the Giants enjoyed significant success. Under his guidance, the Giants’ pitching staff was a cornerstone of their three World Series championships (2010, 2012, 2014).
Dave Righetti’s career is notable for his versatility as a pitcher, excelling both as a promising young starter who threw a no-hitter and as one of the game’s top closers in the mid-1980s. His success as a pitching coach further cemented his impact on the game.
