Harold Abraham “Hal” McRae was a highly competitive and productive Major League Baseball player, primarily known for his exceptional hitting and pioneering role as a designated hitter. His 19-year career (1968-1987) was marked by consistent offense and a fiery personality.
McRae began his career with the Cincinnati Reds, making his MLB debut in 1968. He was part of the nascent “Big Red Machine” but mostly served in a reserve outfielder role during his early years with the team. An injury early in his career impacted his defensive capabilities, leading the Reds to trade him to the Kansas City Royals in 1972.
McRae was a model of consistency at the plate. He hit over .300 six times for the Royals and was a perennial threat for extra-base hits. He finished his career with 484 doubles and 65 triples. In 1982, he had a career year, leading the American League with 133 RBIs, to go along with a .308 batting average and 27 home runs. This performance earned him a Silver Slugger Award. He was a three-time All-Star (1975, 1976, 1982) with the Royals, recognized for his sustained offensive excellence.
McRae was a central figure on the Royals teams that consistently contended for the AL pennant in the late 1970s and early 1980s, facing off against the New York Yankees in several memorable ALCS matchups. He finally reached the pinnacle, winning a World Series championship in 1985 with the Royals.
He was inducted into the Kansas City Royals Hall of Fame in 1989. After retiring as a player, Hal McRae transitioned into coaching and management.
