Theodore Bernard “Ted” Kluszewski, famously known as “Big Klu” and instantly recognizable for his cut-off uniform sleeves, was a powerful left-handed slugger and first baseman in Major League Baseball (MLB). He was a dominant force for the Cincinnati Reds in the 1950s. Big Klu was a rare combination of immense power and exceptional skills. He consistently hit for a high average while crushing home runs. He was a 4-time All-Star (1953-1956). Though he never won a World Series as a player, Kluszewski had a memorable performance in his only World Series appearance in 1959 with the Chicago White Sox. Kluszewski famously cut the sleeves off his uniform jerseys, a practice that was initially against MLB rules. This iconic look became synonymous with “Big Klu.”
Ted Kluszewski’s most recognized and widely collected rookie card is this 1948 Leaf #38.
