David Earl “Dave” Philley was a professional baseball player who enjoyed a long and remarkable 18-season career in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1941 to 1962. A versatile switch-hitter, he played primarily as an outfielder but also saw time at first base and third base. Philley finished his career with a solid .270 batting average with 1,700 hits. In 1953, he had one of his best offensive seasons, batting .303 with 188 hits for the Philadelphia Athletics. As he got older, Dave Philley became one of the most renowned pinch-hitters in baseball history. He had a remarkable ability to deliver crucial hits off the bench.
