Kerry Wood is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher, most famous for his explosive debut and his high-strikeout performances, particularly for the Chicago Cubs.
Wood’s career spanned 14 seasons (1998, 2000–2012) with the Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Indians, and New York Yankees, though he is best remembered as a Cub. In just his fifth career start on May 6, 1998, Wood delivered a historic performance, throwing a one-hit, no-walk, 20-strikeout shutout against the Houston Astros. It is often cited as one of the greatest single-game pitching performances in history.
He won the National League Rookie of the Year award in 1998, his debut season and Wood was a two-time MLB All-Star (2003, 2008).
Due to recurring injuries, Wood transitioned from a starting pitcher to a relief pitcher/closer later in his career. He missed the entire 1999 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery (ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction) in his right elbow, which was a major setback so early in his career.
Throughout his career, he frequently dealt with various arm and shoulder injuries that limited his overall innings pitched and long-term durability as a front-line starting pitcher.
