Overview of 1997 Bowman Baseball Cards

The 1997 Bowman baseball cards feature two main sets, the 1997 Bowman paper base set and the highly-regarded 1997 Bowman Chrome set. The standard base set features 441 cards and The Bowman Chrome set featured 100 veterans and 200 prospects/rookies, for a total of 300 cards.

Prospect Focus: Like all Bowman releases, the set is heavy on rookies and prospects, with the veteran players making up the first part of the checklist and the prospects/rookies making up the later cards.

The “International” Parallel: Both the base Bowman and the Bowman Chrome sets introduced the “International” parallel. These cards are notable for featuring the player’s country of origin flag in the background on the front and back, foreshadowing the increasing global nature of baseball talent.

Key Rookie and Prospect Cards: The 1997 Bowman and Bowman Chrome sets are most famous for the Rookie Cards (RCs) and Prospect Cards of players who would go on to have significant careers. These cards, particularly the Bowman Chrome versions and their Refractor parallels, are highly sought after.

(Rookiecardprices.com only shows values for regular base set cards. No prices are shown for errors, parallels, subsets, misprints or other cards unless noted.)

1997 Bowman Chrome Refractors: The classic chrome parallel with a rainbow-like finish (approx. 1:20 packs).

1997 Bowman Chrome International Refractors: The most scarce of the non-autographed parallels (approx. 1:24 packs). They combine the refractor finish with the flag background. The Bowman Chrome Refractors of the key rookies are the most desirable cards and command the highest prices in the secondary market, especially in high-graded condition.

Autographs: The 1997 Bowman line also featured 1997 Bowman Certified Ink Autographs.  An autograph set with an on-card signature design, including parallels with different ink colors (Blue, Black, and Gold).

The 1997 Bowman release is an essential set from the late 90s, marking the beginning of the highly popular Bowman Chrome line and featuring a legendary cast of rookies that continue to make it relevant today.
