Eric Chavez was a highly talented third baseman known for his exceptional defense, steady offense, and commitment to the Oakland Athletics franchise during a period of significant success for the club.
Chavez spent the prime of his career (1998–2010) with the Oakland Athletics, who drafted him 10th overall in the 1996 MLB Draft. He was a cornerstone of the “Moneyball” era teams that won four straight American League West titles from 2000 to 2003.
Chavez was one of the most celebrated defensive third basemen of his era, combining superb range, strong throwing accuracy, and impressive reaction time. He won six consecutive Gold Glove Awards from 2001 to 2006, an achievement that puts him among the elite third basemen in American League history, alongside legends like Brooks Robinson and Buddy Bell.
Unfortunately, Chavez’s career was significantly hampered by recurring back and hand injuries, which limited his playing time and effectiveness after his Gold Glove run ended in 2006.
He later had brief comebacks with the New York Yankees (2011–2012) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (2013–2014) primarily as a reserve player, but he never regained his early-career form.
Since retiring, Chavez has transitioned into coaching and front-office roles. He has notably served as a hitting coach and an assistant general manager, continuing his involvement in baseball operations.
Eric Chavez shares this 1997 Topps “Draft Pick” rookie card with Adam Eaton.
