Lawrence “Larry” Eugene Doby was a pioneering figure in Major League Baseball, forever etched in history as the second African American player to break the color barrier in MLB (following Jackie Robinson) and the first in the American League. On July 5, 1947, just 11 weeks after Jackie Robinson’s debut in the National League, Doby made history by stepping onto the field for the Cleveland Indians, becoming the first Black player in the American League. Doby played a crucial role in the Indians’ 1948 World Series victory, batting .301 in the regular season. In Game 4 of the series, he became the first African American player to hit a home run in a World Series.
He was deservedly inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998 by the Veterans Committee. The Cleveland Guardians (formerly Indians) retired his uniform number 14 in his honor.
