Frederick “Fred” Charles Hutchinson was a respected figure in baseball, known both as a successful pitcher and a highly regarded manager whose life was tragically cut short by cancer.
Hutchinson was a right-handed pitcher who spent 10 seasons in Major League Baseball (1939-1940, 1946-1953), all with the Detroit Tigers. His playing career was interrupted for five years (1941-1945) by service in the United States Navy during World War II, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Fred Hutchinson’s life was tragically cut short when he died from lung cancer in 1964 at the age of 45, while still managing the Cincinnati Reds. In his honor, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, his hometown, was established in 1975, becoming a world-renowned institution dedicated to finding cures for cancer.
