Adam Wainwright, nicknamed “Waino,” is a recently retired American professional baseball pitcher who spent his entire 18-season MLB career (2005–2023) with the St. Louis Cardinals. He is recognized as one of the franchise’s most iconic and durable starting pitchers.
Wainwright began his career as a reliever and, famously, closed out the 2006 World Series by striking out Carlos Beltrán to win the NLCS and then earning a save in the clinching game of the World Series. After moving to the starting rotation, he became a consistent ace, leading the NL in wins twice (2009, 2013) and innings pitched twice (2009, 2013). He was a four-time top-three finisher in NL Cy Young Award voting. His signature pitch is one of the best curveballs of his era, which he affectionately nicknamed “Uncle Charlie.” He also utilized a four-seam fastball, sinker, changeup, and cutter.
He was a 3-time All-Star, a 2-time World Series Champion (2006, 2011), a 2-time Gold Glove Award winner, and the recipient of the prestigious 2020 Roberto Clemente Award for his humanitarian work (founding the Big League Impact charity).
