Carlos Zambrano, often nicknamed “Big Z,” is a former Venezuelan professional baseball pitcher who was known for his exceptional talent, fiery passion, and occasional volatility. He spent the majority and most successful part of his 12-season MLB career (2001–2012) with the Chicago Cubs.
He was selected to the National League All-Star team three times (2004, 2006, 2008). Zambrano was a power right-handed pitcher with a wide and impressive repertoire, including a high-90s fastball, a powerful slider, and a circle changeup. He was known for his competitive fire on the mound. Uniquely, Zambrano was an elite hitting pitcher, winning the Silver Slugger Award three times (2006, 2008, 2009). His career included 24 home runs and a respectable .238 batting average, making him one of the best-hitting pitchers of the modern era.
Zambrano’s career is defined by the constant tension between his immense, frontline-starter talent and the emotional intensity that often made him an unpredictable and controversial figure in baseball.
