Joe Mauer is a former catcher and first baseman who is widely considered the greatest “hometown hero” in sports history. A St. Paul native, Mauer was the #1 overall pick in the 2001 MLB Draft and spent his entire 15-year career with the Minnesota Twins. He was a pure contact hitter with a legendary swing that made him a statistical anomaly for a catcher.
Mauer’s peak from 2006 to 2013 was historic. He is the only catcher in MLB history to win three batting titles, and his 2009 season is often cited as one of the best ever by a backstop. In 2009, Mauer had a season for the ages. Despite missing the entire month of April with a back injury, he returned to lead the American League in Batting Average: .365 and On-Base Percentage: .444. He won the AL MVP in a near-unanimous vote, proving that a catcher could be the most dangerous offensive threat in the game.
Mauer’s transition from player to legend has been swift and well-deserved. Unlike many of his peers, he didn’t have to wait long for Cooperstown. In 2024, Mauer was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. He became just the third catcher ever to be a “first-ballot” Hall of Famer, joining Johnny Bench and Iván Rodríguez.
In a major event during the 2025 season, the Minnesota Twins unveiled a permanent bronze statue of Mauer outside Target Field. It stands alongside other Twins legends like Kirby Puckett and Rod Carew.
