Kevin Youkilis is a former infielder who became the face of the “Moneyball” era in Boston. Known for his unorthodox batting stance, gritty style of play, and elite ability to reach base, “Youk” was a cornerstone of two World Series championship teams with the Boston Red Sox.
The nickname, “Greek God of Walks” coined by Billy Beane in the book Moneyball, perfectly described Youkilis’s plate discipline. He was famous for a stance where he held his hands high and separated his top hand from the bat during his waggle. Despite the “walks” moniker, he developed significant power, hitting 29 home runs and finishing 3rd in MVP voting in 2008.
Since retiring in 2014, Youkilis has successfully transitioned into two very different worlds:
Loma Brewing Company: Youkilis moved to Northern California and opened Loma Brewing Company in Los Gatos. He is very hands-on with the business, and the brewery has won several awards for its craft beers.
In 2022, he joined NESN (New England Sports Network) as a primary color commentator for Red Sox games. As of the 2025 season, he remains a fan favorite in the booth, known for his blunt, analytical, and often humorous “old school meets new school” perspective on the game.
