Overview of 1993 Pinnacle Baseball Cards
The 1993 Pinnacle Baseball set is a quintessential example of the “super-premium” era of the early 1990s. Produced by Score, Pinnacle was designed to compete with high-end brands like Upper Deck and Stadium Club.
Set Overview & Design: The set consists of 620 cards, split evenly into Series 1 and Series 2 (310 cards each). The cards feature a high-gloss finish with a striking black border and a white pinstripe frame around the player’s photo.
Condition Sensitivity: Because of the solid black borders, these cards are notorious for showing “chipping” or white edges. Finding them in a “Gem Mint” PSA 10 state is significantly harder than other sets from this era.
Anti-Counterfeit: Pinnacle was famous for its unique “anti-counterfeit bar code” on the back, which required a special “Lenticular detector card” to read.
Key Rookie Cards: The 1993 Pinnacle set contains one of the most important rookie cards of the modern era.
- Derek Jeter (#457): This is his “true” Pinnacle rookie card. While it isn’t as valuable as his 1993 SP rookie, it is a staple for any Jeter collector.
- Jason Kendall (#458): A prominent rookie card at the time.
- Trevor Hoffman (#602): The Hall of Fame closer’s rookie card is found in Series 2.
Notable Subsets: The set is packed with thematic subsets that helped it feel more “premium” than the standard Score brand.
- Idols: These cards featured a current star paired with a legend or historical figure (e.g., Jeff Bagwell with Carl Yastrzemski).
- Now and Then: Comparing a veteran’s current look to their early career or rookie days.
- Hometown Heroes: Celebrating players in their local team markets.
- Draft Picks: Featuring the top prospects from the 1992 MLB Draft.
(Rookiecardprices.com only shows values for regular base set cards. No prices are shown for errors, parallels, subsets, misprints or other cards unless noted.)
Chase Inserts & Parallels: 1993 was a transition year for Pinnacle as they began experimenting with Dufex technology—a metallic, rippled foil finish that would become their hallmark.
- Team Pinnacle: A popular insert featuring two players (one AL, one NL) on a double-sided card.
- Team 2001: Predictive cards featuring players Pinnacle believed would still be stars in the year 2001.
- Tribute: A special 10-card set honoring the legendary careers of Nolan Ryan and George Brett, who both retired after the 1993 season.
- The “Cooperstown” Set: This was a separate, rarer 30-card set produced by Pinnacle. The Dufex parallels of this set are extremely rare and can fetch hundreds or even thousands of dollars in high grades (especially the Ken Griffey Jr. and Nolan Ryan cards).
Collecting Tip: If you are looking to buy these today, the Series 2 boxes are generally more sought after because they contain the Derek Jeter rookie and the Series 2 Team Pinnacle inserts.
