Jason Kendall is a former American professional baseball catcher who played 15 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). He spent the majority of his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but also played for the Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, and Kansas City Royals.
Kendall was known for his contact-hitting ability, durability, and competitive spirit. He consistently posted a high batting average and on-base percentage throughout his career. He was also an exceptional baserunner for a catcher. He was a three-time All-Star, making the team in 1996, 1998, and 2000. In his rookie season of 1996, he was named NL Rookie of the Year by The Sporting News. In 2000, he became the first player in Pirates history to hit for the cycle at Three Rivers Stadium.
He retired from playing in 2010 but has remained involved in baseball, serving as a special assignment coach for the Royals and, more recently, taking on a player development role with the Pirates. He is the son of former major league catcher Fred Kendall.

Did You Know? What makes Kendall an absolute sabermetric standout in baseball history is his unprecedented speed and on-base efficiency relative to his position. He treated the basepaths like an outfielder, routinely catching opposing batteries off guard.
He is one of the very few catchers in modern history to record three separate 20-stolen base seasons (1998, 1999, and 2000), peaking with a career-high 26 steals in 1998. His absolute individual pinnacle arrived during the 2000 regular season campaign, where he hit a blistering .320 with 14 home runs, 33 doubles, 112 runs scored, and a stellar .412 on-base percentage. Kendall remains one of the ultimate dual-threat backstops to ever play the game, single-handedly rewriting modern positional expectations.
