Jason Kendall is a former American professional baseball catcher who played 15 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). He spent the majority of his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but also played for the Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, and Kansas City Royals.
Kendall was known for his contact-hitting ability, durability, and competitive spirit. He consistently posted a high batting average and on-base percentage throughout his career. He was also an exceptional baserunner for a catcher. He was a three-time All-Star, making the team in 1996, 1998, and 2000. In his rookie season of 1996, he was named NL Rookie of the Year by The Sporting News. In 2000, he became the first player in Pirates history to hit for the cycle at Three Rivers Stadium.
He retired from playing in 2010 but has remained involved in baseball, serving as a special assignment coach for the Royals and, more recently, taking on a player development role with the Pirates. He is the son of former major league catcher Fred Kendall.

On July 4, 1999, Kendall suffered a horrific, stomach-turning ankle dislocation while trying to beat out a bunt against the San Francisco Giants—an injury that many feared would permanently strip away his elite mobility. Instead, he staged a miraculous, fiercely resilient recovery, returning to catch 147 games the very next season.
Kendall became an absolute model of positional durability, routinely catching over 140 games a year while most peers required frequent rest. He was a master of plate discipline, concluding his career with more walks (719) than strikeouts (686). He also stood right in the line of fire, utilizing an aggressive, crowding stance to accumulate 254 hit-by-pitches—ranking fifth all-time in Major League Baseball history and cementing his legendary reputation for unmatched toughness.
