Overview of 1993 Leaf Baseball Cards

The 1993 Leaf baseball set is often remembered by collectors as the year Donruss (the manufacturer) finally brought the brand back into the “premium” conversation. After a few years of somewhat drab, grey-bordered designs, the 1993 set took a major leap forward in production quality to compete with high-end brands like Stadium Club and Ultra.

Set Structure & Design: The set was released in three distinct phases with a total card checklist of 550. Series 1 & 2: 220 cards each. Update Series: 110 cards (often harder to find, as only 6,250 cases were produced).

The design was striking in comparison to previous Leaf releases. The cards featured a borderless, full-bleed color photos with a high-gloss “UV” coating on both sides. The card backs were particularly unique, featuring a second action photo set against a background of a landmark or monument from the player’s home team city.

Key Cards & The “Big Hurt” Factor: The 1993 set is heavily dominated by Frank Thomas, who was the brand’s primary spokesperson at the time.

Frank Thomas Autograph: This is the “Holy Grail” of the set. Leaf had Thomas sign 3,500 cards which were randomly inserted into the Update Series. They are individually hand-numbered and remain a bucket-list item for 90s collectors.

Dave Winfield 3,000 Hits: A special tribute card commemorating his milestone, also found in Update packs.

Rookie Cards: While the “Junk Wax” era isn’t known for scarce rookies, this set features the Rookie Card of J.T. Snow (#500). It also features early cards of stars like Mike Piazza (#35) and Pedro Martinez (#163).

Popular Subsets & Inserts: Leaf leaned heavily into the “chase card” craze of the early 90s with several high-quality inserts:

Gold Leaf Rookies: These featured a gold foil “Leaf” logo and focused on top prospects (10 in Series 1, 10 in Series 2, and 5 in Update).

Heading for the Hall: A 10-card set focusing on future legends like Nolan Ryan and George Brett.

Frank Thomas Collection: A multi-series insert set entirely dedicated to different aspects of Thomas’s game.

(Rookiecardprices.com only shows values for regular base set cards. No prices are shown for errors, parallels, subsets, misprints or other cards unless noted.)

Condition Sensitivity: Because the cards have black edges on the back and high-gloss fronts, they are prone to “chipping” and “bricking” (sticking together in unopened packs). If you find a sealed box, open it carefully!

The “Update” Premium: If you are looking to complete the set, the Update Series (#441–550) is the hardest to find because of its limited production run compared to the massive printings of Series 1 and 2.
