DeShields broke into the big leagues with the Montreal Expos in 1990, finishing second in the Rookie of the Year voting. Alongside teammates like Marquis Grissom and Larry Walker, he helped define the “run-at-all-costs” identity of those Expos teams. He was a stolen base machine, swiping 40 or more bases in each of his first four full seasons.
Unlike many speedsters of the era, DeShields had a great eye. He frequently drew 70–90 walks a year, which pushed his on-base percentage (OBP) into the elite .370–.390 range.
In November 1993, DeShields was the centerpiece of one of the most lopsided trades in MLB history. The Expos traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a young setup man named Pedro Martínez.
DeShields had a solid first year in LA, but his production dipped afterward, and he never quite reached the superstar heights the Dodgers envisioned when they gave up a future Hall of Fame pitcher to get him.
He had a major resurgence in 1997, hitting .295 and stealing 55 bases (a career high) for the St. Louis Cardinals. DeShields also played for the Baltimore Orioles and finished a 13-year career with 463 stolen bases and over 1,500 hits.
“Bop” stayed in the game, serving as a first-base coach and manager in the minor leagues (currently in the Nationals organization). DeShields was also known for his look—the high-top fade in the early 90s and his signature earrings made him one of the “coolest” players on the diamond during the Expos’ heyday.
