Greenwell’s career is defined by the 1988 season, where he put up monster numbers but finished second in the AL MVP race to Jose Canseco. Canseco won as the first “40/40” man (40 HRs, 40 SBs). Years later, when the steroid era came to light and Canseco became its “whistleblower,” Greenwell famously (and half-jokingly) asked, “Where’s my MVP trophy?” arguing that he was the best clean player that year.
In 1988, he set a then-American League record with 23 game-winning RBIs. On September 2, 1996, Greenwell put on a show that remains a statistical anomaly. In a 10-inning game against the Seattle Mariners, the Red Sox won 9-8. He drove in all 9 runs. He is one of the only players in history to account for every single one of his team’s RBIs in a high-scoring victory.
Greenwell had one of the most eclectic post-baseball lives of any player.
- NASCAR: He traded his cleats for a fire suit and actually raced in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 2006.
- Family Fun: He owned “Mike Greenwell’s Bat-A-Ball & Family Fun Park” in Cape Coral, Florida (now called Gator Mike’s).
- Public Service: Later in life, he entered politics and served as a County Commissioner in Lee County, Florida.
Tragically, the baseball world lost Greenwell; he passed away in October 2025 at the age of 62 after a battle with cancer. He remains a quintessential “Red Sox for Life” icon.
