José Canseco was one of the most polarizing figures in baseball history, known for both his prodigious power and the controversies that defined his career. A two-time World Series champion and six-time All-Star, he was a key figure in the “Bash Brothers” era of the Oakland Athletics.
Canseco burst onto the scene with the Oakland Athletics, winning the American League Rookie of the Year award in 1986. Two years later, in 1988, he became the first player in MLB history to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in the same season, a feat that earned him the AL MVP award.
Alongside teammate Mark McGwire, Canseco formed the legendary “Bash Brothers” duo. Their powerful home runs and famous forearm bash celebration made them a cultural phenomenon and a central part of the Athletics’ success in the late 1980s.
Canseco won a World Series with the Athletics in 1989 and a second one with the New York Yankees in 2000. Over his 17-year career, Canseco hit 462 home runs and had 1,407 RBIs.

Did You Know? Alongside his towering teammate Mark McGwire, Canseco formed half of the legendary “Bash Brothers” duo that thoroughly intimidated American League pitching staffs throughout the late 1980s.
The duo brought a distinct, rock-and-roll attitude to the Coliseum, celebrating their frequent home runs with a high-energy forearm smash that fans across the country routinely replicated. This power-packed core anchored a dominant Oakland roster that reached three consecutive World Series. Canseco was an absolute force during their peak, providing a lethal middle-of-the-order threat that culminated in a dominant four-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants to capture the 1989 World Series Championship.
